Finding Calm in the Air: Overcoming Flight Phobia

Flying can be exciting for some, although for many, it triggers intense fear. Flying phobia often comes from the deep sense of being completely out of control in the air. Whether it’s trusting the plane’s technology, the pilot, or just the feeling of being confined, this vulnerability can feel overwhelming.

Many people cope by relying on prescriptions or alcohol to get through a flight. You don’t have to. With the right support, it’s possible to feel calm, confident, and even relaxed while flying.

Why Flying Feels Scary

Flying phobia usually comes from a sense of powerlessness—the feeling that you’re at the mercy of forces outside your control. Understanding this is the first step toward changing how you experience air travel.

Preparing for Your Flight with a Therapist

A virtual pre-flight psychotherapy session can help you feel grounded before your trip. Conducted from the comfort of your hotel room or home, the session is designed to help you:

  • Calm your mind and body before traveling

  • Build confidence in your ability to handle the flight

  • Practice guided visualizations that reduce anxiety

Sessions are scheduled between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., with flights ideally between 12 p.m. and 9 p.m.

How to Get Started

To begin, request individual psychotherapy on my website using the Request Appt option (scroll to bottom of page in this link).

  • You’ll first have a 20-minute video consultation to discuss your needs and plan your first session.

  • After your initial session, you’ll have weekly sessions for at least 4 weeks

  • To be considered an active client, bookings should be at least weekly.

  • If you are a weekly traveler, it is recommended to have at least weekly sessions for 30 days or more to build consistent coping skills and reduce anxiety before flights.

Breaking the Pattern

These virtual sessions are a gentle, supportive way to reduce reliance on prescriptions or alcohol while flying. With guidance, visualization exercises, and practice, you can start to reshape your relationship with air travel, making it less stressful and more manageable.

Virtual pre-flight sessions are available for travelers flying from airports throughout California and Oregon. Taking this step is an empowering way to approach your next flight with confidence and calm.
